This week’s optimistic environmental news:
- The innovation turning desert sand into farmland – “…the untreated area used almost 137 cubic metres of water for irrigation and the one treated with [Liquid Nanoclay] used just 81 cubic metres.”
- Paris Agreement: All 197 signatories now taking national climate action – “The study, released today by the London School of Economics, reveals that since the climate treaty was agreed in Paris in December 2015 106 climate change laws and policies have been created worldwide, bringing the global total to more than 1,500 separate measures. Some 28 new laws or policies explicitly reference the agreement.”
- U.S. top court rejects Constitution Pipeline over New York permit – “The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday dealt another setback to a proposed natural gas pipeline running from Pennsylvania to New York, rejecting Constitution Pipeline Co’s bid to challenge New York state’s refusal to issue a needed water permit for the project.”
- Hawaii Becomes First State in the U.S. to Ban the Toxic Pesticide Chlorpyrifos (also banned suncreen that harms coral reefs) – “‘There is much to celebrate,’ said Gary Hooser, president of the public interest group Hawaii Alliance for Progressive Action (HAPA). ‘This was a compromise in which everyone’s voice was heard, and most importantly, the community’s well-founded fears about their health were addressed. Our families have some much-needed protections against chemicals that we know are harming their health.'”
- EU plans to massively increase spending on climate change – “Under the new proposals, covering the period between 2021 and 2027, a total of €320 billion will be spent on climate adaptation and mitigation, an increase of €114 billion.”
